Luka Dončić has signed a maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers worth $165 million over three years, which includes a player option in 2028 – keeping Dončić with the Lakers through the 2027-2028 season, and bypassing free agency next summer.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported: “BREAKING: Los Angeles Lakers All-NBA star Luka Doncic has signed a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the franchise, with a player option in 2028, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN.”

Dončić, 26, confirmed the news on social media, writing: “I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning. 💜💛

In a shocking move last season, the Lakers acquired Dončić from the Mavericks for Anthony Davis. In his first half-season with the Lakers, Dončić helped the team make the playoffs (though they were eliminated in the first round in five games by the Minnesota Timberwolves). For the 2024-25 season, Dončić averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game.

As part of the extension announcement, Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka called Dončić “one of the game’s most transcendent players…Luka is an absolute killer on the court, and blends that with a unique generosity and care for the community. Above all else, Luka will lead our franchise to pursue future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers.”
