Playing in their first World Cup tournament in 52 years, the Democratic Republic of Congo celebrated a memorable return to the World Cup on Wednesday, earning a 1-1 draw against Portugal in Group K and earning the nation’s first point in tournament history.
Portugal struck early in the Group K opener at NRG Stadium when Pedro Neto delivered a cross that João Neves headed home in the sixth minute. Roberto Martínez’s side controlled possession and looked comfortable, but DR Congo (competing in its first World Cup since the 1974 tournament when it played as Zaire), steadily grew into the match and found an equalizer just before halftime. Yoane Wissa converted a cross from Arthur Masuaku, scoring the country’s first-ever World Cup goal and silencing a Portugal side led by Cristiano Ronaldo, who was making a record sixth World Cup appearance at age 41. Ronaldo struggled to make a major impact as Portugal managed limited clear chances despite enjoying long spells on the ball. Congo, coached by Sébastien Desabre, threatened to complete the upset after the break, with Cédric Bakambu striking the post during one of several dangerous counterattacks.
The result capped a remarkable comeback for the Congolese team, which qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament through the intercontinental playoffs. Congo had failed to score and lost all three matches in its only previous World Cup appearance 52 years ago, making Wednesday’s performance a landmark achievement. Players celebrated Wissa’s goal with the traditional “Fimbu” dance, a symbol embraced by the national team in recent years.
The draw leaves Group K wide open as both sides prepare to travel for their second matches of the group stage on Tuesday. Portugal remains in Houston to face Uzbekistan, looking to correct their offensive struggles, while the energized Democratic Republic of Congo squad travels to Mexico to match up against Colombia.
